Our area features more than 1600 lakes, towering pines and hardwoods, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, and the shores of Lake Superior. Our host facility in Hibbing, Fairview Range Regional Health Services, is a regional medical campus providing a full spectrum of health services. Community Culture With more than 1600 lakes, towering pines and hardwoods, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, diverse wildlife, and the shores of Lake Superior, the beauty of Northeastern Minnesota is striking. Communities in the region range in size from 61 people in Tamarack to 86,125 in Duluth and are spread across 20,731 square miles. The largest employers in the region are in services, trades, transportation, and manufacturing industries. The landscape of the region varies greatly, from iron mines and timber on the western edge to shorelines speckled with rugged cliffs and roaring waterfalls on the eastern edge. This diversity offers incredible opportunities to explore all that Northern Minnesota has to offer. Healthcare represents a major industry in Northeast Minnesota, with more than 27 hospitals and community health centers providing comprehensive primary and secondary care services through a strong base of local health care providers. The Northeast Minnesota AHEC includes the counties of Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Kanabec, Koochiching, Lake, Mille Lacs, Pine, and St. Louis.
