Community Development and Vitality

The Center for Integrated Natural Resources and Agricultural Management (CINRAM) creates connections among individuals--researchers and farmers, agriculture and natural resource professionals, and local government leaders and the University faculty, landowners and environmentalists, industry representatives and public agency staff--who help make and implement land use decisions.

The Center for Rural Design works with people to preserve, improve, and protect rural landscapes, cultures and communities through innovative design strategies. The web site details the Center’s projects and products.

The Center for Small Towns is a community outreach program housed at the University of Minnesota, Morris (UMM) and serves as a point-of-entry to the resources of the University of Minnesota. Small towns, local units of government, K-12 schools, non-profit organizations, and other University units are able to utilize the Center's resources as they work on rural issues or make contributions to rural society.

The Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA) is a technical assistance center that connects faculty and student researchers with nonprofit organizations, businesses, neighborhoods, local governments, and state agencies in Minnesota. F

The Community Tool Box promotes community health and development with practical guidance on leadership, strategic planning, community assessment, grant writing, and evaluation, among other topics.

The Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station funds research by University of Minnesota scientists on ways to improve Minnesota’s agricultural and forest products, horticulture, human nutrition, family and community life, and environmental quality.

Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships work to sustain Minnesota’s natural resource-based communities and industries by addressing community-identified agricultural, natural resources and tourism issues in partnership with the University of Minnesota.

Rural Minnesota Life provides resources to revitalize rural Minnesota families and businesses.

The University of Minnesota Extension Service is the major educational outreach arm of the University of Minnesota. Its Community Development and Vitality programs enhance the economic strength, civic empowerment, technological literacy and social capital of Minnesota's citizens and communities. Its Business Retention and Expansion Strategies Program brings local leaders and development groups together with Extension professionals and University faculty to help communities explore options for strengthening local businesses. Through a central office located in the University of Minnesota's Extension Service and a network of Regional Extension Educators and Certified BR&E Consultants, the program is ready to assist Minnesota communities interested in improving their local economies.

Woodlands Wisdom is a collaboration between Tribal Colleges and the University of Minnesota. The goal of Woodlands Wisdom is to integrate traditional Native knowledge with Western methodologies to create, promote, and support sustained healing processes of American Indian communities.

Nonprofit Board Development

Board Source strengthens nonprofit boards of directors through consulting, publications, and tools.

CompassPoint Nonprofit Services is a consulting, research, and training organization that provides nonprofits with management tools, strategies, and resources to lead change in their communities.

Free Management Library provides comprehensive information on leadership and management issues.

Minnesota Council of Non Profits works to strengthen the state's nonprofit sector - particularly in regard to management, governance, and public policy. The web site collects many of the important management, fundraising, and legal resources, including the Principles and Practices for Nonprofit Excellence, the Council’s popular guidelines on nonprofit accountability.

The National AHEC Organization (NAO) is the national organization that supports and advances the Area Health Education Center (AHEC)/Health Education Training Center (HETC) network in improving the health of individuals and communities by transforming health care through education.
