Health Professions Students and Residents
Northeast Minnesota AHEC welcomes health professions students and residents with these exciting opportunities:
- Disciplinary Clinical Rotations of between two weeks and nine months for students in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, and public health.
- A nine-month, community-based educational experience in rural Minnesota primary care for third-year medical students, offered through the Rural Physician Associate Program (RPAP).
- Rotations for dental and dental hygiene students at the Hibbing Community Dental Clinic, which provides dental services to uninsured and underserved local residents.
- Visits to rural and frontier counties of northeastern Minnesota, organized by Wilderness Health Interdisciplinary Professions Program (WHIP).
- Interprofessional education activities, such a one-day event focused on battling methamphetamine abuse.
- Student-organized community service projects.
- The Summer Internship in Medicine (S.I.M.) and Summer Internship in Pharmacy (S.I.P.) are rural immersion experience occurring during the summer months. S.I.M. and S.I.P. encourage health professions’ student involvement in community, health systems, clinical medicine, pharmacy, and interprofessional experiences in rural and underserved areas. Moreover, the programs provide students with an experiential reference as they continue their training and the opportunity to experience rural communities as a professional.
Loan Repayment and Scholarship
- The Northeast Minnesota AHEC presents information sessions on and works in collaboration with the National Health Service Corps to identify loan and scholarship opportunities.
- The Minnesota Office of Rural Health and Primary Care offers several loan forgiveness (repayment) programs to primary care physician residents, dental students and students in RN, LPN, NP, PA, CNM, nurse anesthetist and advanced clinical nurse educational programs.
- The National Health Service Corp (NHSC) continually seeks fully trained health professionals who are dedicated to working with the underserved. Visit their site to see if you are eligible to compete for repayment of qualifying educational loans if you choose to serve in a community of greatest need.
- Visit the Academic Health Center Office of Education for news on grant fellowship and scholarship opportunities.
